Although I only got to spend 24 hours in Mackinaw City, it was long enough to know it wasn't long enough.
Here's a rundown of the few favorites I was able to see while in town.
Mackinac Island
Stop reading, go get your bucket list, add Mackinac Island and then come back and finish reading this blog.
-
Car-Free Environment: One of the most distinctive features of Mackinac Island is its car-free policy. Motorized vehicles are not allowed on the island, creating a peaceful and serene atmosphere. Transportation is primarily by bicycle, horse-drawn carriage, or on foot. This policy not only reduces pollution but also adds to the island's nostalgic and idyllic charm.
-
Historical Significance: Mackinac Island boasts a rich history dating back to Native American tribes and later as a crucial fur trading post. The island was also a pivotal location during the War of 1812. Visitors can explore several well-preserved historical sites, including Fort Mackinac, where reenactments and educational exhibits provide insights into the island's past.
-
Natural Beauty: The island's natural beauty is breathtaking. With its lush landscapes, stunning bluffs, and pristine shoreline, Mackinac Island offers picturesque views at every turn. The island is home to numerous hiking trails that lead to scenic overlooks, such as Arch Rock, a natural limestone arch that provides stunning vistas of Lake Huron.
-
Grand Hotel: The Grand Hotel, a Victorian-era masterpiece, is one of the island's most iconic landmarks. Known for its grandeur and timeless elegance, the hotel features the longest porch in the world and offers visitors a taste of classic luxury. Even if you're not staying at the hotel, you can still explore its grounds and enjoy its restaurants and amenities.
-
Fudge and Culinary Delights: Mackinac Island is famous for its delectable fudge. The island boasts a plethora of fudge shops that offer a variety of flavors, making it a sweet tooth's paradise. Additionally, the island's dining scene features a diverse range of culinary options, from casual cafes to fine dining restaurants, often emphasizing locally sourced ingredients and fresh seafood.

Headlands International Dark Sky Park
What? Are you serious? I came upon this park by accident and WOW what a find! I have never seen a place like this before and it was super cool for those who love the stars, northern lights and of course, aliens!
When I visited, it was a cloudy night with less than zero chance of seeing the lights so I didn't stay, but I would have for sure if there was even the smallest chance.
Headlands International Dark Sky Park, located in Michigan, offers a mesmerizing celestial experience amidst its pristine natural surroundings. As an accredited Dark Sky Park, it provides a unique opportunity for stargazing enthusiasts and nature lovers to marvel at the brilliance of the night sky, free from light pollution. With its carefully managed lighting and expansive observation areas, the park allows visitors to witness the majesty of stars, planets, and constellations with exceptional clarity. Guided astronomy programs and educational events further enhance the experience, making Headlands International Dark Sky Park a haven for those seeking to connect with the cosmos and deepen their understanding of the universe.
KOA Journey
We stayed at the KOA in Mackinaw City and it was great. Although we weren't there long enough to enjoy much of the park, the staff were super nice and gave us a great dinner recommendation that was spot on! Darrow's Family Restaurant - GET THE PIE!
