I enjoyed an unforgettable day of adventure at Myakka State Park in Sarasota, Florida. Known as one of the oldest and largest state parks here in Florida, Myakka State Park offers a diverse array of experiences that will captivate nature enthusiasts and outdoor adventurers alike.
When I first moved to Florida, I had a desire to see alligators in the wild. I had high hopes that seeing them in their natural habitat would calm my nerves and remove a bit of the fear I had. It worked. I was in awe at the size of them... and how many of them there were at this park!
For first time visitors, here is my day trip itinerary suggestions:
Begin your day by immersing yourself in the park's stunning natural beauty. As you traverse the trails that wind through the lush landscapes, you'll be surrounded by towering oak trees, majestic palms, and vibrant wildflowers. Keep your eyes peeled for an array of wildlife, including graceful deer, elusive bobcats, and even the iconic Florida alligator, as they thrive in their natural habitats.
For a truly immersive experience, embark on a kayak or canoe excursion on the park's serene waterways. Paddle through tranquil lakes and meandering rivers, surrounded by a symphony of nature's sounds. As you explore, you'll have the opportunity to spot turtles basking on logs, otters playing in the water, and alligators getting their daily sun.
After a morning of outdoor exploration, find respite at the park's picnic areas and indulge in a delicious lunch amidst nature's embrace. Unwind and recharge as you soak up the peaceful atmosphere and take in the picturesque surroundings.
Don't miss the Canopy Walkway!
This structure is the first public treetop trail in North America. The walkway is suspended 25 feet above the ground and extends 100 feet through the hammock canopy. The taller tower soars 74 feet in the air to present a spectacular view of treetops, wetlands and the prairie/hammock interface. You can look down on eagles, hawks, vultures, and the tops of live oak and sabal palm trees.
