Exploring Devil's Millhopper Geological State Park: A Natural Wonder in Florida
Devil's Millhopper Geological State Park in Florida is a captivating natural attraction that boasts a unique geological formation. We stopped at this park, located near Gainesville, as our last adventure on the Michigan to Florida road trip.
The park features a massive sinkhole that descends 120 feet, revealing layers of limestone and a lush, miniature rainforest at its base. We walked down to the sinkhole via a sturdy wooden staircase that took only a few minutes. You can see the sinkhole and walk the nature trail during your lunch break! It's that quick! Which worked perfect for us since it was a heavy travel and we needed a quick lunch stop to stretch our legs.
A visit to Devil's Millhopper offers a rare glimpse into Florida's geological history, with fossils dating back millions of years. The park is a haven for nature enthusiasts, providing opportunities for hiking and wildlife observation along its scenic trails. With its fascinating geological features and rich biodiversity, Devil's Millhopper Geological State Park is a great place for a school trip for an educational experience!
There is a minimal entry fee ($4 when we were there in Aug 2023) but bring cash because it works on the honor system with a cash box and dashboard tag.
This park offers a nice reprieve from the direct sunlight with glowing green moss that was so vibrant it didn't look real! PS We ate our sandwiches in the van because it was August and super duper hot outside but they do have picnic tables so bring your lunch, take a wander through history and share your adventure story in your Pen Pal book!
