Biking Along the Pinellas Trail:
The Pinellas Trail is a paved over railroad track trail that spans 45 miles through Pinellas County. We drove from St. Pete to Dunedin to try the trail somewhere new. We found FREE parking in a garage which was perfect because it allowed us to load and unload the bikes in shade. (365 Monroe St)
Pedal at your own pace as you pass by tranquil parks, sparkling waterways, and occasional wildlife sightings, providing a refreshing connection with nature.
Along the way we saw gigantic grasshoppers, a spoonbill bird, picturesque parks, tunnels and bridges to cross, and took tons of pics of it all! Most shocking of all was the gorilla's... seriously we saw gorilla's while biking. We stopped to find out there is a primate sanctuary in Palm Harbor and the back side of it runs along the bike trail. I can't wait to go back and visit when time permits!
Tarpon Springs:
As you approach Tarpon Springs, the trail guides you through a charming coastal town renowned for its Greek heritage and sponge diving traditions. Take a break and explore the lively streets lined with family-owned bakeries, gift shops, and authentic Greek restaurants. Don't miss the opportunity to stroll along the waterfront, admiring the picturesque marinas and historic sponge docks, where you can learn about the town's fascinating maritime history.
We had lunch at Dimitri's on the Water and the staff was superb! They allowed us to park our bikes nearby and sit close to keep an eye on them. Our server made excellent recommendations and we felt pampered while we ate hummus, tzatziki, pitas, wraps and greek salads! We recommend!
Covering a grand total of 24 miles, our biking expedition from start to finish was quite the adventure. Originally, we had intended to make a stop at Honeymoon Island for additional sightseeing, but considering it would have extended our journey by another 10 miles, we decided to save it for another biking day. As we pedaled back, filled with excitement and satisfaction, we took the opportunity to plan our next biking excursion, eagerly anticipating the new trails and experiences that awaited us.
A day trip bike ride from Dunedin to Tarpon Springs and back along the Pinellas Trail is an adventure that combines outdoor exploration, cultural immersion, and unforgettable experiences.
