A trip to Boyd Hill Nature Preserve was where I encountered my first alligator in the wild!
The 245-acre, award-winning property features 6 miles of trails and boardwalks with a variety of habitats and animals including birds of prey! The preserve includes boardwalks and sandy trails under the trees and is a comfortable walk for shade during the heat of the summer.
If you meander slowly through the whole property and really take in the sights and sounds, you could spend a few hours there. There is a nominal admission fee which goes to care for the habitats and property, but I recommend becoming a 'friend' to Boyd Hill if you live in town.
After your scenic nature walk, head over to The Chattaway for afternoon tea!
One of the best kept secrets in St Pete! – This restaurant has a colorful atmosphere that boasts flowers of all colors in unique planters and koi fish in a pond... and that's just the beginning!
Local musicians play regularly and the outdoor seating boasts a 'Key West' vibe. Award winning burgers are the all-time favorite with the locals here and yes, they offer high tea in a genuine English Tea Room fit for a 'Queen'! Quite literally! (Note that reservations are required for high tea)
I visited during the day but MUST make it back for the band and a burger after sunset!
If you follow our adventures, you know what comes next.... a note to say 'WHY OF COURSE this day trip will make it onto the pages of a Pen Pal Adventure Book!
